FAQs
Is Acupuncture safe?
When performed by a qualified and certified Acupuncturist, acupuncture is considered gentle and safe. However as with any form of therapeutic intervention there can be some unwanted side effects.
Tenderness, mild bleeding and bruising at the treatment site.
Redness and some swelling at the insertion point.
Feeling sleepy and tired after treatment
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is not painful. In some cases people describe a mild, temporary discomfort or a slight tingling sensation when the needles are inserted. This passes almost immediately. Most people find acupuncture treatments incredibly relaxing and calming.
How many sessions will I need?
Acupuncture is not a miracle treatment and it is important to understand that like any form of therapeutic intervention results are never guaranteed, even by the best Practitioner.
Most people will notice some sort of change after the first session. For some it may take a bit longer. The number of sessions you'll need depends on your individual condition, the nature of your health concern and your responsiveness to treatment.
In general, the longer you have had a condition for, the longer the course of treatment. Like any type of healthcare approach, it is common to need to undergo a series of sessions to achieve the full therapeutic benefit of acupuncture.
What is the difference between Acupuncture and dry needling?
Both acupuncture and dry needling use fine needles that are placed at specific points across the body.
Dry needling is a term used by Western based therapists, such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and myotherapists. It is the technique of inserting a needle into an area of tight muscle, mainly used for sporting injuries.
In Chinese medicine the term used for this by a Practitioner is “Ashi” needling and is similarly focussed at treating local pain.
However an individualised acupuncture treatment is able to incorporate a wider variety of acupuncture points across the body targeting underlying causes and imbalances.
Is Acupuncture covered by Medicare or private health insurance?
Unfortunately, acupuncture is not covered by Medicare as yet.
Private health insurance funds (such as Bupa, AHM, Medibank, etc) may offer rebates for acupuncture with Extras cover. Check with your insurer if you are not sure.
Elke Holistic Health has a HICAPS machine and is registered with some providers. Please bring your benefits cards to your consultation and if eligible, we will claim your rebate at the end of your session.
